A step-by-step roadmap to getting your MC Authority and hitting the road.
1. Form Your Business Entity
Register your business as an LLC or Corporation in your state and apply for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the IRS.
2. Get Your CDL & Equipment
Obtain your Commercial Driver's License (CDL) if you haven't already, and secure your truck and trailer through purchasing or leasing.
3. Apply for USDOT & MC Numbers
Register with the FMCSA to get your USDOT number and Motor Carrier (MC) Authority. This is required for interstate commerce.
4. Secure Commercial Insurance
Obtain primary liability and cargo insurance. The FMCSA requires proof of insurance to be filed before your authority becomes active.
5. File BOC-3 & UCR
File your BOC-3 (Designation of Process Agent) and register for the Unified Carrier Registration (UCR) for the states you'll operate in.
